Stay Comfortable, Blend in with Nature, and Be Safari-Ready
Embarking on a safari in Uganda is one of the most exciting and enriching experiences you can have in Africa. From tracking mountain gorillas through misty rainforests to spotting lions on the golden plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, every moment is a chance to connect with the wild. But to make the most of your adventure, it’s essential to pack and dress appropriately. At Uganda Horizon Safaris, we ensure our guests are well-prepared for every terrain, climate, and occasion.
Uganda’s weather and landscapes are beautifully diverse — you may experience cool mountain air in Bwindi, dusty game tracks in Murchison Falls, and tropical warmth at Lake Victoria. Your clothing and packing choices can greatly enhance your comfort and safari experience. With the right gear, you’ll feel confident, prepared, and fully immersed in the moment — ready for early morning drives, jungle treks, boat safaris, and cozy evenings by the campfire.
Natural tones like khaki, olive, beige, and brown are ideal. These colors help you blend in with the environment and are less likely to attract insects or disturb wildlife. Avoid bright colors, white (which gets dirty easily), and dark colors like navy and black (which attract tsetse flies in certain parks).
Recommended Items:
Lightweight long-sleeve shirts
Breathable cotton T-shirts
Safari trousers or convertible pants
Cargo shorts or hiking shorts
You’ll need sturdy, comfortable shoes for walking safaris or gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Good traction is essential for muddy trails and uneven terrain.
Pack:
Waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes
Flip-flops or sandals for lodge downtime
Comfortable walking shoes for lighter activities
The African sun can be intense. Protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A buff or scarf can also help protect your neck from sun and dust.
Uganda’s climate can shift quickly. Mornings are cool, afternoons warm, and rain can come suddenly — especially in the forests.
Don’t forget:
Lightweight waterproof jacket
Fleece or sweater for chilly mornings and high altitudes
Poncho or raincoat for downpours
For jungle treks and evenings near water, wear long sleeves and trousers to protect against mosquitoes and other insects. Insect-repellent clothing or a good DEET-based repellent is highly recommended.
Uganda Horizon Safaris recommends packing light and smart, especially if you are taking domestic flights or long overland journeys. Soft duffel bags or backpacks are preferred over hard suitcases for space-saving and vehicle storage.
