6-Day Mount Elgon Traverse

Standing as a silent, ancient sentinel on the Ugandan-Kenyan border, Mount Elgon is a volcanic giant that once rivaled Kilimanjaro in height. Unlike the jagged rock of the Rwenzoris, Elgon offers a vast, otherworldly landscape of prehistoric flora and the world’s largest intact caldera. This 6-Day Traverse from Sipi to Kapkwata with Uganda Horizon Safaris is the ultimate connoisseur’s route. It allows you to ascend through the iconic triple-tiered Sipi Falls and the mysterious Tutum Cave, cross the 40 $km^2$ volcanic crater, and descend via the gentle, wildlife-rich Kapkwata (Piswa) trail. It is a journey of profound solitude, where the horizon stretches across the Karamoja plains and the air is scented by wild everlastings.

  • Arrival: Pick up from Entebbe International Airport by your Uganda Horizon Safaris guide.

  • Transfer: A short drive to Kampala.

  • Evening: Expedition briefing and gear check over dinner.

  • Stay: Overnight in Kampala (e.g., Cassia Lodge or Fairway Hotel).

  • Morning: Early departure (7:00 AM) driving east through Mabira Forest and over the Nile at Jinja.

  • Afternoon: Arrive at Sipi & afternoon trek to the base of the main 100m waterfall + viewpoint

  • The Hike: Enter the park at the Kapkwai Exploration Center (2,050m). Trek through lush montane forest—home to Black-and-white Colobus monkeys—to reach the massive Tutum Cave, hidden behind a waterfall.

  • Stay: Camping at Tutum Cave (2,667m).

  • Distance: ~11km | Time: 5–6 hours

  • The Hike: Transition from the forest into the bamboo zone and eventually the high-altitude heath. You’ll pass through the “Simu Valley” with views of the rugged volcanic ridges.

  • Stay: Kajeri Camp (3,383m), famous for its spectacular sunset views over the plains.

  • Distance: ~14km | Time: 6–7 hours.

  • The Hike: Traverse the high ridges toward the center of the mountain. You are now in the realm of the Giant Lobelias. Cross the stream that feeds the Sipi Falls and approach the Sasa trail junction.

  • Stay: Mude Cave Camp (3,500m).

  • Distance: ~12km | Time: 5–6 hours.

  • Summit: An early push to Wagagai Peak, the highest point on the caldera rim.

  • The Traverse: After the summit, instead of heading down, you walk across the massive caldera floor to Hunters Cave, passing high-altitude hot springs along the way.

  • Stay: Hunters Cave Camp (3,850m).

  • Distance: ~18km | Time: 8–9 hours.

  • The Descent: A long but gentle descent via the Piswa Trail. This side of the mountain is famous for its podocarpus forests and sweeping views into the Karamoja region.

  • Exit: Reach the Kapkwata trailhead (2,190m) by midday.

  • Transfer: Meet your vehicle and begin the long drive back to Kampala, arriving late in the evening.

  • Stay: Overnight in Kampala or late transfer to Entebbe.
