5-Day Mount Elgon Trek (Wagagi peak & Sipi Falls)

Mount Elgon offers a very secluded, ancient landscape featuring the world’s largest volcanic caldera and the iconic Giant Lobelias.

For a 5-day expedition, the most balanced and rewarding route is the Sasa-Sipi Circuit. This allows you to ascend through the dramatic “Wall of Death” (now safe with metal stairs!) and descend via the scenic Sipi trail, ending near the famous waterfalls.

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) you will be met by our driver and transferred to your accommodation in Entebbe. You will meet your guide for a briefing to make sure that you are perfectly prepared for your hike.
Upon arrival at the hotel you will check into your rooms and then be at leisure for the rest of the day.

  • Morning: Early pick-up from Kampala or Entebbe for a scenic drive east through the Mabira Forest and Jinja.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at Budadiri (1,250m) for briefing and porter assignment. You’ll take a short ride to the trailhead at Bumasola.
  • The Hike: A steep climb through local coffee plantations. You’ll conquer the “Wall of Death”—a massive cliff once climbed by ropes, now accessible via sturdy metal ladders.
  • Stay: Sasa River Camp (2,900m).
  • Distance: ~8km | Time: 4–5 hours.
  • The Hike: Today is a shorter but steady gain in altitude. You’ll transition from the lush montane forest into the unique bamboo zone.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at Mude Cave Camp (3,500m) by lunchtime. The rest of the afternoon is for acclimatization. You can take a short walk to explore the surrounding heather moorland.
  • Stay: Mude Cave Camp.
  • Distance: ~5km | Time: 3–4 hours.
  • The Hike: An early start for the summit push. You’ll walk across the Alpine moorland, passing Jackson’s Pool and the caldera rim. The trail is rocky but not technical.
  • The Peak: Stand at Wagagai Peak, the highest point on Mount Elgon, offering views across the massive 40$km^2$ caldera and into Kenya.
  • Afternoon: Descend back to Mude Cave Camp for a celebratory dinner.
  • Stay: Mude Cave Camp.
  • Distance: ~18km (round trip) | Time: 7–9 hours.
  • The Hike: Instead of retracing your steps, you’ll head toward the Sipi Trail. This is a long, mostly downhill day through some of the mountain’s most beautiful landscapes, including the Dirigana Falls.
  • Afternoon: Exit the park at the Forest Exploration Centre and transfer to a lodge in Sipi.
  • Stay: Sipi River Lodge or Noah’s Ark Hotel (Sipi).
  • Distance: ~21km | Time: 8–9 hours.
  • Morning: Enjoy a guided walk to the three main Sipi Waterfalls. You can even opt for a “Farm-to-Cup” coffee experience to see how the local Arabica coffee is processed.
  • Afternoon: Begin the drive back to Entebbe, with a stop in Jinja for lunch.
