Rising like a silent, mist-cloaked fortress along Uganda’s western frontier, Rwenzori Mountains National Park is one of Africa’s most spectacular and least-explored wilderness areas. Often called the “Mountains of the Moon”, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven for serious trekkers, nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers yearning to conquer Africa’s highest mountain range outside of Kilimanjaro.
With its permanently snow-capped peaks, ancient glacial valleys, mystical alpine vegetation, and surreal landscapes, Rwenzori Mountains National Park offers a mountaineering experience unlike any other in East Africa. For those who dare to explore it, the park rewards with untamed beauty, rare flora and fauna, and the pride of stepping where few have.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, we specialize in guided treks into the heart of the Rwenzoris, offering both challenging expeditions to Margherita Peak and shorter scenic hikes through the lush lower ranges. Whether you’re chasing the thrill of a summit or the peace of a quiet forest walk, Rwenzori Mountains National Park delivers a truly unforgettable experience.
Located on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers nearly 1,000 square kilometers of rugged mountain terrain. The Rwenzoris are home to Africa’s third-highest peak—Margherita (5,109m)—found on Mount Stanley, as well as glacial lakes, moss-draped forests, and the kind of silence that speaks to the soul.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, which is a free-standing volcano, the Rwenzoris are a true mountain range formed through tectonic activity. As a result, the park features multiple peaks over 4,000 meters, deep gorges, and six distinct vegetation zones, ranging from montane forest to afro-alpine meadows filled with giant groundsel and everlasting flowers.
This is Uganda’s premier trekking destination, and yet it remains blissfully untouched by mass tourism. The solitude and beauty of the Rwenzoris make them a top choice for travelers seeking something authentic, raw, and rewarding.
Margherita Peak (5,109m)
The highest summit of Mount Stanley and the third-highest point in Africa. Trekking to the summit via the Central Circuit Trail is an exhilarating 7–9 day alpine adventure.
Glaciers & Alpine Lakes
The Rwenzori is one of the few places in Africa where you can still see glaciers. Lakes like Lake Kitandara and Lake Bujuku sit like gems among towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks.
Unique Afro-Alpine Vegetation
Encounter landscapes filled with giant lobelias, tree heathers, and sponge-like mosses, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Birding & Wildlife
The park is home to over 200 bird species, including the Rwenzori turaco, long-eared owl, and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird. You may also spot blue monkeys, chameleons, and elusive red duikers.
Local Bakonzo Culture
The Bakonzo people live on the slopes of the Rwenzoris and have a rich tradition of mountain folklore, music, and herbal knowledge. Cultural encounters add depth to your trek.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, we offer a variety of trekking packages and excursions into the Rwenzoris. Our experienced mountain guides are certified, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the beauty of this majestic range.
The most popular multi-day trekking route, starting from Nyakalengija, looping through the valleys, and offering a chance to summit Margherita Peak. This is a true alpine expedition requiring good physical fitness.
Starting from Kilembe near Kasese, this route passes through the Nyamwamba Valley, known for its spectacular waterfalls, ridges, and alpine lakes. Suitable for those wanting a less crowded, scenic route.
Not ready for the summit? Take a day hike or overnight trek in the lower forested zones for waterfall views, birdwatching, and cultural visits. Perfect for families or less experienced hikers.
Capture the mystical atmosphere of the cloud forests, ancient vegetation, and rare birds with our guided photo tours. Our guides are trained to help you spot and identify key species.
Visit a Bakonzo village, enjoy traditional music and storytelling, and learn about the mountain’s spiritual significance to local communities.
The best time to trek the Rwenzoris is during the dry seasons: December to February and June to August. Trails are less slippery, and the skies are clearer for photography and summit views. However, due to the high altitude and equatorial location, rain can fall at any time, so good gear is essential.
Stay at Rwenzori Base Camp, Kilembe Guesthouses, or local eco-lodges before your trek. On the mountain, you’ll stay in well-maintained wooden huts at designated campsites, with meals and porter support included in your itinerary.
With Uganda Horizon Safaris, your Rwenzori experience is crafted with care, safety, and deep local knowledge. We handle all logistics—permits, park fees, equipment, meals, and accommodation—so you can focus on the adventure.
Whether you’re aiming for Margherita Peak, soaking in the scenery on a short forest hike, or diving deep into the heritage of the Bakonzo people, we’ll guide you through every step of this extraordinary journey.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park isn’t just a destination—it’s a transformation. Let’s climb higher together.
