Full-Day Historical Tour Itinerary

Pickup Time: 8:00 AM from any hotel in Kampala or Entebbe
Tour Duration: Approx. 9 hours (including driving time from Entebbe)


08:00 AM – Hotel Pickup & Briefing

  • Meet your expert historical guide at your hotel.

  • Begin the drive through Kampala’s hills, with an introduction to Uganda’s pre-colonial kingdoms and political landscape.


**09:00 AM – Kabaka’s Palace (Lubiri) & Idi Amin’s Torture Chambers

  • Explore the official palace of the Kabaka (King) of Buganda, set on Mengo Hill.

  • Visit the Amin-era underground torture chambers, once used by the military intelligence during the 1970s.

  • Learn about the history of the Buganda Kingdom, its conflicts with central government, and the significance of the palace in modern Uganda.


10:30 AM – Kasubi Royal Tombs (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

  • Visit the sacred burial site of four former kings of Buganda.

  • Discover traditional Ganda architecture, royal rituals, and the site’s reconstruction efforts after a major fire.

  • This site remains one of the most spiritual and political symbols in Uganda.


12:30 PM – Lunch at the Historic Speke Hotel

  • Enjoy lunch at the Speke Hotel, one of Uganda’s oldest hotels dating back to the colonial era.

  • Soak in the colonial charm while hearing stories of British officials, early travelers, and independence-era meetings.


02:00 PM – Sheraton Gardens & Independence Monument

  • Take a walk through the Sheraton Gardens, a peaceful city oasis and historical meeting point.

  • Visit the nearby Independence Monument, a tribute to Uganda’s independence in 1962.

  • Learn about the country’s journey from colonial rule to self-governance.


03:30 PM – Drive through Kampala Landmarks (Optional Stop at Nakasero Market)

  • Drive past the Parliament of Uganda, National Theatre, and Gaddafi Mosque (optional exterior photo stop).

  • Optional visit to Nakasero Market—a lively downtown market reflecting Kampala’s economic and social history.


04:30 PM – Drop-off at Your Hotel in Kampala or Return Transfer to Entebbe

  • Drive back to your hotel with scenic views of Kampala’s seven historic hills.

  • Optional short break along the way for souvenirs or refreshments.

  • Drop-off by approx. 6:00 PM (depending on traffic and location).

Absolutely yes. We will arrange all airport transfers for you from and to the airport so that you don’t have to worry about how to get to your hotel. One of our drivers or guides will come to pick you up and take you back to the airport. This is already included in our offers and services.

A private departure can be arranged at any time according to your individual travel dates for highest flexibility. A group departure has a planned schedule on a specific date and let you share some costs while travelling. So if you are on a budget and want to meet friends from all over the world you can join one of our groups.

Absolutely yes. Our handpicked hotels all offer you to safely store your luggage during your climb. In this way you can leave all gear that you won’t need during your climb at the hotel. That is very convenient if you are planning to go on a safari or to Zanzibar after your hike.

Tanzania Horizon Safaris has worked out a very transparent cancellation policy. In most cases we can offer a voucher if you have  to postpone your travel. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Please note that deposits are non-refundable as they have to be used for making reservations for your hotel and transport.

*If a booking is cancelled the client is subject to a cancellation fee as follows:

  • until 4 weeks prior to departure – 30% Cancellation Fee
  • 4-2 weeks prior to departure – 50% Cancellation Fee
  • 2-1 weeks prior to departure – 75% Cancellation Fee
  • less then 1 week prior to departure – 100% Cancellation Fee: The company reserves the right to cancel any tour at its sole and absolute discretion, without prior notification in instances where this is unavoidable. However, in that case the company agrees to refund all money that has already been paid by the client. This shall be the company’s sole responsibility to the client and no claim for any damages, howsoever arising, shall accrue against the company.
