Uganda Horizon Safaris – Understanding Altitude Sickness Before Your Rwenzori Adventure
Climbing high-altitude mountains such as the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda is one of the most rewarding adventures in Africa. The breathtaking views, rare alpine vegetation, and sense of achievement when reaching Margherita Peak (5,109 meters) are unforgettable. However, trekking at high altitudes carries certain challenges, and one of the most important to understand is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, your safety is our top priority. We believe that being informed about AMS is key to preventing it and enjoying your climb to the fullest. This guide explains what AMS is, its symptoms, prevention, and treatment — so you can trek with confidence.
Acute Mountain Sickness is a condition that can affect climbers, trekkers, and travelers who ascend to high altitudes too quickly, typically above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). It occurs because the air at high elevations contains less oxygen, and the body needs time to adjust (acclimatize) to this change.
If you climb too fast without giving your body time to adapt, you may experience mild to severe symptoms. While most cases are mild and can be treated easily, AMS can progress to more serious conditions if ignored.
Mild symptoms usually appear within 6 to 24 hours after arriving at high altitude and may include:
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Fatigue or weakness
Shortness of breath during exertion
Difficulty sleeping
Loss of appetite
If these symptoms are ignored or you continue to ascend without acclimatizing, AMS can progress to more dangerous conditions:
High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) – swelling of the brain.
High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) – fluid in the lungs.
These are medical emergencies and require immediate descent and treatment.
The Rwenzori Mountains are unique because climbers ascend from tropical rainforest at around 1,600 meters to icy glaciers above 5,000 meters in just a few days. This rapid change in elevation makes acclimatization essential.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, our itineraries are carefully designed with gradual ascent profiles and rest days to give your body time to adjust. Our experienced guides monitor you closely for any signs of AMS.
Climb Slowly – The best prevention is a gradual ascent. On our Rwenzori climbs, we pace each day to allow for natural acclimatization.
Stay Hydrated – Drink at least 3 liters of water per day. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.
Eat Well – Carbohydrate-rich meals help maintain energy levels.
Rest – Avoid overexertion on the first days at high altitude.
Consider Medication – Some trekkers use acetazolamide (Diamox) to speed acclimatization — discuss this with your doctor before travel.
Listen to Your Body – If symptoms appear, stop ascending and inform your guide immediately.
If you experience mild AMS symptoms:
Rest at the same altitude until symptoms improve.
Hydrate and eat light, nutritious meals.
Take mild pain relievers for headaches if needed.
If symptoms worsen or do not improve with rest:
Descend to a lower altitude immediately.
Seek medical attention if necessary.
