Uganda Horizon Safaris – Nutritious, Locally Sourced, and Delicious Trekking Meals
When you set out to climb the Rwenzori Mountains — the legendary Mountains of the Moon — you’ll be trekking through remote valleys, alpine meadows, and even glaciers. This incredible adventure requires not only stamina but also proper nutrition to keep your energy levels high every single day.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, we understand that food is more than just fuel on the trail. It’s comfort, motivation, and an essential part of your climbing experience. That’s why we take great care to prepare fresh, nutritious, and locally sourced meals throughout your Rwenzori expedition.
One of our key commitments is to buy all our food locally from farmers, markets, and suppliers near the Rwenzoris. This ensures that:
You enjoy fresh seasonal produce every day.
Your meals reflect authentic Ugandan flavors.
We support local communities and small-scale farmers.
The environmental impact of transporting food is reduced.
From juicy pineapples and sweet bananas to organic vegetables and fresh eggs, our meals are prepared with the best that Uganda has to offer.
Climbing the Rwenzoris burns a lot of calories — sometimes up to 6,000 per day during demanding sections. Our experienced mountain cooks plan menus that are:
High in carbohydrates for sustained energy.
Rich in protein to support muscle recovery.
Balanced with healthy fats for endurance.
Packed with vitamins and minerals from fresh fruits and vegetables.
Meals are served in mountain huts or scenic campsites, giving you the perfect setting to relax and refuel.
We start your day with a warm, hearty breakfast to fuel the morning climb.
Typical breakfast items include:
Porridge (millet, oats, or maize) with honey or sugar.
Freshly baked bread or chapati.
Eggs (boiled, fried, or scrambled).
Fresh fruit such as mangoes, pineapples, or bananas.
Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate.
Lunch is often enjoyed at a scenic rest spot along the trail. Depending on the route, this may be a packed lunch or a hot meal prepared by the cook.
Packed lunch items include:
Sandwiches with cheese, avocado, or peanut butter.
Boiled eggs.
Fresh fruit.
Energy snacks like nuts and biscuits.
Hot lunch options at certain huts may feature pasta, rice dishes, or soups.
After reaching camp, many trekkers appreciate a warm drink and light snacks before dinner. We serve:
Biscuits or popcorn.
Tea, coffee, or herbal infusions.
Dinner is the highlight of the day — a satisfying, freshly cooked meal to help you recover. Examples include:
Rice or pasta with vegetable stew.
Ugandan dishes like matoke (steamed bananas) or posho (maize meal) with beans or beef stew.
Lentil soup with bread.
Stir-fried vegetables.
Occasionally, fresh fish or chicken depending on the route and altitude.
Desserts may include fresh fruit salad or a warm treat like banana fritters.
Throughout the trek, we encourage you to carry personal snacks for extra energy. We also provide boiled and filtered water daily to refill your bottles or hydration packs.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, we cater to a wide range of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free diets. All you need to do is inform us in advance so our cooks can plan accordingly.
