Climbing the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, is one of Africa’s most thrilling trekking experiences. With snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, and rare alpine vegetation, the Rwenzoris offer a unique challenge for adventurers aiming to reach Margherita Peak (5,109 meters) or explore the lush lower slopes.
At Uganda Horizon Safaris, your safety is our highest priority. While the Rwenzoris are an unforgettable destination, they also present real challenges — steep climbs, unpredictable weather, and high-altitude conditions. Proper preparation and safety awareness are essential for a successful expedition.
This guide outlines essential safety tips and guidelines to ensure your Rwenzori adventure is safe, enjoyable, and truly rewarding.
The best climbing seasons are:
June to August
December to February
These periods generally have more stable weather and lower rainfall, making trails less slippery and glacier crossings safer. However, rain is possible year-round, so you must still prepare for wet conditions.
The Rwenzoris are remote and rugged — this is not a mountain range for unguided climbs.
Our Uganda Horizon Safaris guides are trained in high-altitude safety, first aid, and glacier navigation.
They know the safest routes, weather patterns, and how to respond in emergencies.
The higher you go, the thinner the air becomes. Rapid ascents can cause Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Prevention Tips:
Follow a gradual ascent schedule — most summit treks take 7–10 days.
Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
Listen to your body and inform your guide if you feel unwell.
The Rwenzoris have five different vegetation zones, from warm rainforest to freezing glaciers. You must pack for all conditions.
Dress in layers for easy temperature regulation.
Wear waterproof boots with good ankle support.
Carry gloves, a warm hat, and waterproof outerwear.
Use trekking poles for stability on muddy and icy trails.
Climbing burns a lot of energy, and dehydration can happen quickly at altitude.
Drink 2–3 liters of water daily.
Eat energy-rich snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate between meals.
Weather in the Rwenzoris can change from sunny skies to heavy rain within an hour.
Always carry rain gear and a pack cover.
Keep spare clothes in dry bags inside your backpack.
If you’re summiting Margherita Peak, you’ll need to cross glaciers and rocky ridges.
Always be roped to your guide for glacier travel.
Wear crampons securely fitted to your boots.
Move steadily and follow safety commands.
While determination is important, pushing beyond your limits can be dangerous.
If you experience severe symptoms of altitude sickness, your guide may recommend descending.
The Rwenzoris have multiple route options, so your trek can be adapted for safety.
While our guides carry medical kits, you should also bring personal supplies:
Pain relievers
Blister treatment
Antiseptic wipes
Any personal medication
Safety also means ensuring the Rwenzoris remain beautiful for future climbers.
