3 Day Kalalama Trek Experience the Mystical Foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains
Explore the enchanting lower slopes of Uganda’s legendary Rwenzori Mountains on this scenic 3 day Kalalama Trail hike via the Kilembe Trail. This short but rewarding trek is perfect for hikers seeking to experience the diverse mountain ecosystems without ascending to higher altitudes. You’ll hike through pristine montane rainforest, past clear rivers and ancient trees draped in moss, and spend a night at the rustic Kalalama Camp (3,147 m).
This trek offers fantastic opportunities to spot Rwenzori turacos, blue monkeys, and rare three-horned chameleons, all with the support of expert guides from Uganda Horizon Safaris.
Your adventure begins at the Rwenzori Trekking Services base in Kilembe, where you’ll be briefed by your guide and porters. From the gate, ascend through dense rainforest, crossing rivers and listening to the sounds of tropical birdlife. The trail is rich with ferns, orchids, and towering trees. After approximately 5–6 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Sine Camp, nestled beside Enock’s Falls. Relax to the soothing sounds of the forest and enjoy a warm meal as mist rolls through the valley.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: ~1,100 m
After breakfast, hike higher into the Bamboo Zone, where thick stalks and cool temperatures create a mystical atmosphere. The trail leads to Kalalama Camp, offering panoramic views over the forest canopy and deep into the Rwenzori ranges. After a break, descend back to Sine Camp for a second night, enjoying the contrast in vegetation zones and wildlife. This acclimatization circuit provides an ideal introduction to the Rwenzoris for those considering longer treks in the future.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours round-trip
Elevation Gain/Loss: ~550 m
Wake up early to the chirping of forest birds and begin your descent back through the rainforest. Along the way, your guide will point out medicinal plants, bird species, and possible sightings of blue monkeys or even L’Hoest’s monkeys. After descending for about 4 hours, you’ll reach the trailhead, where a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your lodge or hotel in Kasese.
