Climbing the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon, is one of Africa’s most exciting and challenging trekking experiences. Whether you’re taking the Central Circuit Trail or the Kilembe Trail, reaching Margherita Peak (5,109 meters) demands not only physical preparation but also the right gear.
When trekking with Uganda Horizon Safaris, porters will carry the bulk of your luggage in a duffel bag, while you carry a daypack with essentials needed during the hike. Packing correctly can make the difference between a comfortable climb and a difficult one.
Here’s our complete guide to what to carry in your daypack and your duffel bag for a successful Rwenzori expedition.
On the Rwenzori trek:
Duffel Bag (15 kg limit): Carried by porters, contains your main clothing, sleeping gear, and items you won’t need until the evening.
Daypack (10 kg): Carried by you, contains water, snacks, layers, and essentials for the day’s hike.
This system allows you to travel light during the day while keeping important gear close at hand.
Your daypack is your lifeline during the trek. It should be light, waterproof, and comfortable, ideally with a 25–35 liter capacity.
Essentials for Your Daypack:
Water Bottles or Hydration Bladder (2–3 liters) – Staying hydrated is vital, especially at high altitudes.
Snacks/Energy Bars – Nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate for quick energy boosts.
Light Rain Jacket or Poncho – Weather can change quickly, so keep rain protection handy.
Fleece or Insulating Layer – Temperatures can drop fast in the afternoon.
Sun Protection – Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen to protect against strong mountain sun.
Personal First Aid Kit – Include blister plasters, lip balm, and personal medication.
Camera or Smartphone – For capturing the spectacular scenery.
Trekking Poles (Collapsible) – Useful for steep and muddy sections.
Gloves and Beanie – Even at lower altitudes, mornings can be cold.
Headlamp – Essential for early starts or if you arrive late at camp.
💡 Tip: Pack your daypack in waterproof liners or dry bags to protect electronics and clothing from rain.
Your duffel bag will be carried by a porter and should be durable, waterproof, and soft-sided. You won’t access it during the day, so pack only evening and camp essentials here.
Essentials for Your Duffel Bag:
Sleeping Bag – Rated for sub-zero temperatures (-5°C to -10°C).
Base Layers – Merino wool or synthetic for warmth and quick drying.
Mid Layers – Fleece jackets or sweaters.
Insulated Down Jacket – For cold evenings and high-altitude mornings.
Trekking Pants and Shirts – Lightweight, quick-dry materials.
Thermal Leggings – For cold nights and summit day.
Waterproof Pants and Jacket – High-quality shell for rain protection.
Extra Socks and Underwear – Keep them dry in separate bags.
Gaiters – Protect legs from mud and snow.
Glacier Gear (if summiting Margherita Peak) – Harness, crampons, and ice axe (can be rented in Uganda).
Camp Shoes or Sandals – For relaxing after hiking.
Toiletries – Biodegradable soap, toothbrush, small towel, and wet wipes.
💡 Tip: Use compression sacks to save space and organize your clothing by type.
Layering is key – The Rwenzoris have five vegetation zones, each with different temperatures and humidity levels.
Keep gear dry – Use dry bags, waterproof covers, and plastic liners inside your duffel and daypack.
Balance your daypack – Place heavy items close to your back for better weight distribution.
Label your gear – In group climbs, similar-looking bags can be mixed up.
