Embarking on a safari in Uganda is one of the most rewarding travel decisions you can make. From gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, to game drives in Murchison Falls or boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel, Uganda offers an incredible variety of wildlife experiences that are truly world-class.
But one of the most common questions we get at Uganda Horizon Safaris is: “How much does a safari in Uganda really cost?” The short answer is—it depends on your travel style, duration, level of comfort, and the experiences you want to include. The good news? Whether you’re a luxury adventurer, a mid-range traveler, or on a budget, Uganda has something for everyone.
In this guide, we break down the real costs of a safari in Uganda, so you can plan your dream trip with confidence. Our aim is full transparency, excellent value for money, and creating the safari that’s right for you.
Several key factors influence the total cost of your Uganda safari:
If seeing mountain gorillas is on your bucket list (and it should be!), the gorilla trekking permit costs $800 per person (as of 2024). This fee goes directly to conservation and community support.
For chimpanzee tracking, permits cost $200 per person in Kibale Forest, and less in other regions like Kalinzu or Budongo.
Accommodation in Uganda ranges from $50/night (budget guesthouses) to $1000+/night (luxury eco-lodges). Mid-range safari lodges average between $120–$250 per night per person, often including meals and some activities.
The length of your safari has a direct impact. A 3-day safari to Murchison Falls might cost around $700–$1,200 per person, while a 10-day itinerary including gorilla trekking, game drives, and cultural experiences may range from $2,500 to $6,000 per person, depending on accommodation and group size.
Traveling in a private group lowers your per-person cost. Sharing vehicle, guide, and accommodation helps make your safari more affordable. Many of our guests choose small group safaris (4–6 people) for comfort and cost balance.
Uganda is a vast country, and how you move matters. Most safaris use custom 4×4 safari vehicles with a pop-up roof. Fuel, park fees, and driver-guide services are included. Domestic flights are available but more expensive. Road travel gives a more immersive experience.
